Small children are natural storytellers. Give a four-year-old a few puppets, and she will create an intricate plotline in minutes! I created these printable farm animal clothespin puppets so you make simple and inexpensive toys to fuel your little one’s imagination. These great puppets are a hoot for an impromptu puppet show or for imaginative play. My friends have also created several more printable crafts for kids that I will share at the end of the post.

WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE CLOTHESPIN ANIMAL PUPPETS

Usually regular printer paper is fine for the printables I share here on the blog. For something like these bookmarks, I recommend using heavier print paper or white card stock. Regular printer paper will work, but it will tear, bend, and crease very quickly as you use the bookmarks. I will recommend the paper I used below, but any paper over 40 lbs. should work well.

HOW TO ASSEMBLE ANIMAL CLOTHESPIN PUPPETS

These puppets will need to be assembled by older kids and adults because you will need more advanced scissors skills than primary-grade-aged kids will have. If you will be using them in the classroom, you can always make them ahead of time for your students to use. It can also be done as a fun crafting activity for older kids.

How to Make Clothespin Puppets

  1. Print the full-color PDFs on heavy-weight paper. Cut around the animal shapes.

  2. Cut the head and body apart along the mouth line, removing the white space between them.

  3. Glue the animal heads to the top half of the side of a clothespin. Glue the body to the other side of the clothespin. Let dry.

If the animal is facing to the left or right, be sure the handle of the clothespin is facing the opposite direction.

  4. Repeat for all of the animals.

HOW TO USE CLOTHESPIN PUPPETS

Clothespin puppets are super easy and fun to use! Pinching the clothespin open and closed will cause the puppet’s mouth to open and close. You can use these farm animal clothespin puppets to act out familiar stories and songs, or you can create your own!

I suggest storing the puppets in a small plastic tub to prevent the paper from ripping or bending.
