Be Green ‘An Activity Book For Young People Who Want To Sustain And Protect The World We Live In’ is full of fun activities to help children learn about their environment and how they can take care of our planet.

The activities have stimulated some interesting discussions here and led to an increasing awareness of how we can structure our daily activities to be more environmentally friendly.

Be Green! starts with an introduction that tells children that however small they feel they can still make a difference. It encourages them to have fun with the book and gives examples of organisations that they can contact for more information, for example Eco-Schools, Earth Day and The World Wildlife Fund.

Our Friend, The Earth, is introduced with a definition of the word ‘Environment’, facts about climate change and how the planet is under threat. Armed with this information children can then move on to the activities.

We love the first activity, a fun bingo game which encourages children to colour in squares on the board once they have completed activities such as taking a shower instead of a bath, refused a plastic straw in a cafe or used a refillable water bottle. There are eighteen squares altogether and children are encouraged to complete one of the lines within a week.

Be Green!’s activities include growing your own food, making posters and writing slogans, recording the different ways we use water, questions about different kinds of renewable energy, recording temperature and rainfall, encouraging us to find energy friendly ways to travel and paying attention to how much plastic we use.

There are also activities to develop awareness of the dangers facing our rain forests, our coral reefs, The Arctic and our bees. Our favourite activities show children how they can plant a bee garden and how they can make an insect hotel.

Katie Abey’s illustrations are bold, fun, they invite you to start doodling. There are colouring activities, activities to fill in and cut out as well as activities using old magazines.

On the final page children can sign a ‘Pledge to be Green’ and there’s a page for grown ups which gives information about how they can support a child’s learning and understanding. The book promotes important environmental messages and information in a really fun way, introduces new environmental vocabulary and can help to ensure that children grow up with an awareness of their role as a global citizen.
